Dealing with Homesickness
DEALING WITH BEING HOMESICK
The struggle of being far from home, family and friends, whether that be due to University or travelling, is something that most people go through and the ways in which we deal with it can differ.
For me, one of the things I miss most when I'm not home is the comfort of my own bedroom and the knowledge that my parents are downstairs if I need a advice, a chat or just a cuddle. Coming from a relatively close family means that everything I've been through, my family (predominantly my mum and dad) have been beside me. They're still beside me when I'm at Uni but it more metaphorical now.
The creation of facetime is how we're getting through. facetiming your family or friends when you're feeling down, if you have news to share or even if you just fancy a chat is one of the best ways to curb homesickness. It removes the feeling of distance, aiding you to feel closer to loved ones and is the next best thing to having a face to face conversation. However, one point to note is, in my opinion, facetiming every day for long period of time might have the opposite effect and may cause you to miss home even more.
Another way of coping is wherever you are make at least one solid friend who you're comfortable with and is there for a hug when one is needed. I am extremely grateful for the friends I've made at Uni and they have collectively made being away from home easier. For that, I could not be more grateful.
one of the most important things if you're having a down day and feeling homesick is to get out! Especially if you're staying in university accommodation, the rooms can be oppressive and don't aid the bad mood. Taking a walk round the city or through a park can clear your head and leave you feeling much better and far happier!
Wherever you are, whenever you're feeling homesick just drop a family member or friend a message and remember that they'll always be waiting for you at home!
Keep your chin up and your head held high!
Love always, Annabelle
